What is a Hastelloy Alloy Pipes?

Hastelloy Alloy Steel Pipes ,Hastelloy is the trademark name for a family of nickel-based superalloys known primarily for their outstanding corrosion resistance in extremely harsh chemical environments. Hastelloy alloy pipes are essential in industries where standard stainless steel pipes would fail due to aggressive media or high temperatures.

 Core Properties and Composition

Hastelloy alloys are primarily composed of Nickel, combined with significant amounts of Molybdenum and Chromium. This unique composition provides their signature properties:

  • Exceptional Corrosion Resistance: They resist a vast range of chemicals, including strong acids (hydrochloric, sulfuric, phosphoric), wet chlorine gas, and complex, contaminated media.
  • Resistance to Localized Attack: They are highly resistant to localized forms of corrosion, such as pitting (small holes) and crevice corrosion, which are common failure modes for other alloys in chloride-rich solutions.
  • High Thermal Stability: They maintain their mechanical strength and corrosion resistance even at elevated temperatures.
  • Excellent Weldability: Many grades, especially the modern C-type alloys, have very low carbon content, which prevents weld-related sensitization and allows for use in the as-welded condition without post-weld heat treatment.

Major Hastelloy Pipe Grades and Applications

The Hastelloy series are divided into groups, with the "C-type" and "B-type" being the most common for piping applications.

Composition Highlights

C-276 (UNS N10276)

Versatile: Strong resistance to both oxidizing and reducing conditions.

Chemical reactors, flue gas desulfurization (FGD) scrubbers, heat exchangers, sour gas components in Oil & Gas.

Ni-Cr-Mo-W (Nickel-Chromium-Molybdenum-Tungsten). Considered the workhorse alloy.

C-22 (UNS N06022)

Excellent resistance to oxidizing media, wet chlorine, and pitting/crevice corrosion.

Pharmaceutical processing, multi-purpose chemical plants, pollution control equipment.

Higher Chromium content than C-276, giving superior resistance in highly oxidizing conditions.

B-3 (UNS N10675)

High resistance to non-oxidizing acids (reducing conditions).

Piping for handling pure hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid.

Primarily a Ni-Mo alloy, with very little Chromium.

Industrial Uses

Hastelloy Alloy Steel pipes are typically specified for the most critical and corrosive sections of a piping system. Their primary uses include:

  • Chemical Processing: Transporting aggressive chemicals, reaction vessels, and distillation columns.
  • Pollution Control: Ducting and scrubbers for flue gas desulfurization (FGD) and waste incinerators, where acidic condensates are highly corrosive.
  • Pharmaceutical and Biotech: Used in reactors and piping where non-reactivity and high purity are essential, often handling highly corrosive cleaning agents.
  • Oil & Gas: Components in sour gas processing and geothermal wells.
