What Is a Seamless Hastelloy C276 Tube?

Hastelloy C276 (UNS N10276) is a nickel-molybdenum-chromium alloy with a small but critical tungsten addition, widely regarded as the most versatile corrosion-resistant alloy in common use. It resists oxidising and reducing media simultaneously, tolerates both wet chlorine and hypochlorite, and is one of the few alloys that survives chloride-induced pitting and stress-corrosion cracking in acidic chloride service.

Key Features and Technical Advantages

Versatile Corrosion Resistance

Hastelloy C276 resists oxidising and reducing media simultaneously, covering duties that no single-mode alloy can handle.

Excellent Resistance to Pitting and Crevice Attack

The molybdenum-tungsten combination delivers high resistance to localised corrosion in chloride-bearing environments.

Resistance to Wet Chlorine and Hypochlorite

C276 is one of very few alloys that tolerate wet chlorine gas, hypochlorite and chlorine dioxide service.

Immunity to Chloride Stress-Corrosion Cracking

The nickel-rich chemistry makes C276 essentially immune to chloride SCC, even at elevated temperature.

Reliable Fabrication

The alloy is readily welded and formed, with matching filler metal available for corrosion-resistant joints.

Quality Assurance and Manufacturing Process

Certification

All Hastelloy C276 tubes are supplied to ASTM B622 / ASME SB622 and ASTM B619 / ASME SB619 with EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificates. Third-party inspection (SGS, BV, TUV, Lloyd's), PMI reports and full heat-number traceability can be provided on request.

Non-Destructive Testing (NDT)

Hydrostatic or eddy-current testing is performed on 100% of tubes. Ultrasonic testing (UT) and dye-penetrant inspection (PT) are available for critical service, with records retained for each production lot.

Material Verification

Positive Material Identification (PMI) and spectrometric analysis confirm that the chemical composition matches the ordered grade. Intergranular corrosion (IGC) testing to ASTM A262 Practice E is available for austenitic and nickel-alloy tubes.

Mechanical Testing

Tensile, yield, elongation and hardness tests are carried out per heat. Flattening, flaring and reverse-bend tests verify ductility, while creep-rupture data can be supplied for high-temperature grades.

Dimensional Inspection

Outside diameter, wall thickness, ovality and straightness are measured against ASTM A1016 / A1016M or EN 10216-5 tolerances. Length, square-cut ends and end-finish conditions are verified before packing.

Hastelloy C276 vs C22 / B2 – Technical Comparison

C276 is the most widely specified corrosion-resistant nickel alloy. C22 improves its oxidising performance and B2 covers the pure reducing-acid case more economically.

Chemistry

  • C276: Ni-Mo-Cr with tungsten, approximately 16% Mo and 15.5% Cr
  • C22: Ni-Cr-Mo with tungsten, approximately 13% Mo and 22% Cr
  • B2: Ni-Mo with very low chromium, for reducing media only

Corrosion Envelope

C276 resists both oxidising and reducing media and is essentially immune to chloride stress-corrosion cracking. C22 shifts the balance toward oxidising acids and chloride pitting because of its higher chromium, at a small cost in some reducing duties. B2 covers reducing acids only.

Wet Chlorine and Hypochlorite

C276 and C22 both tolerate wet chlorine, hypochlorite and chlorine dioxide service — a capability almost unique to this alloy family and the reason it is standard in bleach and pulp-bleaching plants.

Selection Guide

  • Choose Hastelloy C276 for the broadest mixed-chemistry duty and where field experience is the priority
  • Choose Hastelloy C22 where oxidising acids or chloride pitting dominate
  • Choose Hastelloy B2 only for pure reducing-acid service

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Hastelloy C276 seamless tube?

Hastelloy C276 (UNS N10276) is a nickel-molybdenum-chromium alloy tube with a tungsten addition, produced without a longitudinal weld. It resists both oxidising and reducing media and is one of the most versatile corrosion-resistant alloys in common use.

What makes Hastelloy C276 different from other nickel alloys?

Its combination of molybdenum, chromium and tungsten lets it handle oxidising and reducing media simultaneously, tolerate wet chlorine and hypochlorite, and resist chloride-induced pitting, crevice attack and stress-corrosion cracking. Few alloys cover that range.

What is Hastelloy C276 tube used for?

C276 is used for reactors and heat exchangers in chemical processing, wet chlorine and hypochlorite service, flue-gas desulphurisation scrubbers, pulp and paper bleach plants, and pharmaceutical and fine-chemical equipment handling mixed corrosive media.

What standards cover Hastelloy C276 tube?

Hastelloy C276 seamless tube is supplied to ASTM B622 / ASME SB622, with ASTM B829 covering general requirements and ASTM B619 / ASME SB619 applying to welded pipe.
