What Is ASTM A790 UNS S32205 Seamless Pipe?

Seamless Duplex Stainless Steel S32205 Pipe (Duplex 2205, commonly associated with EN 1.4462) is a high-strength, corrosion-resistant piping product manufactured from a solid billet through hot extrusion or piercing. Unlike welded pipe, seamless duplex pipe contains no longitudinal weld seam, and finished dimensions, soundness and pressure suitability must meet the ordered specification and piping design.

UNS S32205 is an improved nitrogen-alloyed version of UNS S31803, with tighter chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen limits. Its ferritic–austenitic phase balance provides high mechanical strength, excellent resistance to chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking (SCC) andoutstanding pitting and crevice corrosion resistance.

Because of this metallurgical balance, ASTM A790 UNS S32205 seamless pipes are widely used in the offshore, chemical processing and marine industries. Manufacturing is in compliance with ASTM A790 / ASME SA790 as specified in the order, normally in the solution heat treated condition.

Key Features and Engineering Advantages

Duplex S32205 seamless pipes combine corrosion performance with mechanical strength:

Excellent Corrosion Resistance

exceptional resistance to chloride-induced SCC, pitting, crevice and intergranular corrosion — significantly improved over 316L in chloride-containing environments.

High Mechanical Strength

approximately twice the yield strength of standard austenitic stainless steels, enabling potentially thinner walls (subject to design-code calculations), reduced weight and lower installed cost.

Superior Pressure Performance

the seamless structure has no longitudinal weld seam; allowable pressure depends on the design code, diameter, wall thickness, temperature and corrosion allowance.

Cost-Effective Alloy Composition

lower nickel content than high-nickel austenitic grades supports economical material selection; actual cost depends on dimensions, quantity, processing and alloy prices.

Improved Thermal Efficiency

lower thermal expansion and higher thermal conductivity than austenitic grades improve performance in heat exchangers and thermal processing equipment.

Size Tolerance Chart

The standard of stainless steel seamless pipe size tolerance (ASTM A790 / ASME SA790, per ASTM A999 references):

Wall Thickness (WT) Tolerance — minimum wall at any point shall not be more than 12.5% under the nominal wall; maximum over-nominal variation depends on size and the t/D ratio:

NPS Designator (Inches)t/D RatioPermissible Variation (Over Nominal WT)
1/8 to 2, incl.All ratios+20.0%
3 to 18, incl.t/D ≤ 5%+22.5%
t/D >5%+15.0%
20 and larger (Seamless)t/D ≤ 5%+22.5%
t/D >5%+15.0%
20 and larger (Welded)All ratios+17.5%

Length Tolerance: for pipe ordered to a specific cut length, the standard tolerance is +1/8 in. (3.2 mm), −0. Pipe is typically supplied in Single Random Lengths (17 to 24 ft) or Double Random Lengths (38 to 40 ft), unless otherwise specified.

Disclaimer: these tolerances reflect common ASTM A790 requirements (primarily via its reference to ASTM A999). The current edition of the applicable specification governs acceptance.

Industrial Applications of Duplex S32205 Pipes

Duplex 2205 seamless pipes are used in the following industries. Suitability depends on temperature, chlorides, pH, flow and design requirements; seawater service may require a higher-alloyed grade.

Oil and Gas Industry

  • Subsea flowlines
  • Offshore platform piping
  • Risers and manifolds
  • Process piping in refineries

Chemical Processing

  • Pressure vessels
  • Heat exchangers
  • Chemical storage tanks
  • Chloride-containing process systems

Marine and Desalination

  • Seawater piping systems
  • Reverse osmosis (SWRO) desalination plants
  • Shipboard piping

Pulp and Paper Industry

  • Digesters
  • Bleach plant equipment
  • Chemical liquor tanks

Quality Assurance and Testing Standards

Inspection and documentation requirements should be agreed before ordering and linked to the pipe heat number:

Positive Material Identification (PMI)

verifies alloy identity; the material test certificate and appropriate chemical analysis verify the full ordered composition, including nitrogen.

Corrosion Testing

ASTM G48 pitting corrosion test and intergranular corrosion testing where specified.

Non-Destructive Testing (NDT)

agree the applicable method and acceptance criteria — Ultrasonic Testing (UT) or Eddy Current Testing (ET).

Microstructure Verification

metallographic examination verifies that the ferrite–austenite phase balance meets the applicable specification and project requirements.

Documentation

request EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 certificates and confirm the inspection scope before ordering.

S31803 vs S32205: Composition and Certification

Frequently Asked Questions About UNS S32205 Seamless Pipe

Is S32205 the same as Duplex 2205?

UNS S32205 is a commonly specified grade of Duplex 2205. The name 2205 is also used for S31803, so purchase orders should state the exact UNS grade and product standard.

What standards apply to UNS S32205 seamless pipe?

This product is supplied to ASTM A790 and ASME SA790 requirements for duplex stainless steel pipe. Project-specific dimensions and tolerances should be confirmed against the latest applicable specification.

What is the difference between UNS S32205 and UNS S31803?

S32205 specifies higher minimum chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen contents within the broader S31803 composition range. S31803 alone does not establish compliance with S32205 — confirm dual certification on the material test certificate.

Where is Duplex 2205 seamless pipe commonly used?

Typical applications include oil and gas piping, chemical processing, offshore and marine systems, desalination, heat exchangers, and pulp and paper equipment.

What mechanical properties are listed for S32205 pipe?

Minimum tensile strength 655 MPa, minimum yield strength 450 MPa, minimum elongation 25%, and maximum hardness 293 HBW at room temperature, per the ordered specification.

What inspection and documentation are available?

PMI, ultrasonic or eddy-current testing, corrosion testing, microstructure examination and EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 certification can be agreed. The agreed inspection plan determines the supplied tests and documents.
